Kyushu University participated in ¡°MIRAI Global Challenges Winter School¡± in Stockholm

MIRAI is an international university consortium of 17 Japanese and Swedish universities, launched in 2017. In January 2024, it entered its third phase, with Kyushu University newly appointed as the Coordinating University of the Japanese side.

MIRAI has been supporting early career researchers (ECRs) and connecting mid-career researchers to promote long-term research collaboration between Sweden and Japan since it first started[A1] , In its third phase, MIRAI aims to address global issues through interdisciplinary collaboration based on .

As part of this initiative, the "Global Challenges Winter School" was organized as the first in-person program for ECRs in the third phase. The hosted the program, with Kyushu University co-organizing on behalf of Japan. This program received a grant of 2 million Japanese yen from the to support the travel of Japanese participants.

The program took place from November 17 to 22, 2024, bringing together 27 ECRs from Sweden and Japan, including four PhD students from Kyushu University:

  • Shinobu Utsumi (Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Science, D2)
  • Binrong Lin (Graduate School of Design, D2)
  • Aoi Tsukioka (Graduate School of Economics, D1)
  • Jiaxu Zhang (Graduate School of Engineering, D1) 

During the program, participants joined a variety of lectures on EU-Japan relations, with a focus on Sweden¡¯s perspective. Representatives from industry, including Mitsubishi Corporation, Business Sweden, Ovako Steel, along with policy makers from Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Sweden, Embassy of Japan in Sweden and VINNOVA also delivered lectures during the program. 

In the second half of the program, participants attended the This event offered networking opportunities with 80 researchers and a company visit to Ericsson. These experiences, combined with relaxed Swedish coffee breaks known as ¡°Fika,¡± gave participants additional chances to explore research collaborations across diverse fields.
