Kyushu University holds first Global Advisory Board Meeting

The first Kyushu University Global Advisory Board meeting was held on October 23, 2024, at Ito Campus.

The Global Advisory Board was established to provide Kyushu University with opinions and suggestions on the strategic promotion of internationalization. It aims to transform Kyushu University into a "university that drives social change with integrative knowledge," as outlined in the university¡¯s "VISION 2030." The board members offer insights and proposals to the university¡¯s leadership regarding this initiative.

The board members, who are world-renowned researchers and university presidents, included President Monte Cassim of Akita International University, President Wen-Chang Chen of National Taiwan University, and President Karin Markides of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST).

The meeting theme was "Strengthening Research Capabilities." During the morning session, Kyushu University President Tatsuro Ishibashi introduced the university's activities based on "VISION 2030," followed by a presentation from Kyushu University Provost Makoto Aratono on a new framework for strengthening research capabilities.

The subsequent lab tour included the Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics Research (OPERA) and the Research Center for Hydrogen Industrial Use and Storage (HYDROGENIUS), which consistently carry out research from basic studies to social implementation. The tour also featured the Ultramicroscopy Research Center, a facility with world-leading levels of resolution and compositional analysis precision.

The afternoon session began with presentations from two institutions showcasing organizational efforts to strengthen research: the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) under the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) program (WPI-I2CNER) and the International Research Center for Hydrogen Energy.

During the Open Forum that followed, participants engaged in lively discussions about university strategies, challenges and solutions, and future directions for strengthening research capabilities. The board members offered their opinions and suggestions on the importance of the following initiatives:

  • Fostering trust in relationships with stakeholders in response to shifts in the role of universities within a changing society
  • Strengthening ties with society
  • Leveraging the university¡¯s historical and geographical advantages
  • Deepening both international connections and multifaceted collaborative relationships domestically and within the university
  • Involving graduate students from the 19 graduate schools in the three entry points defined in "VISION 2030"
  • Providing interdisciplinary education that addresses social changes
  • Establishing a personnel system that promotes the hiring and advancement of excellent young researchers
  • Cultivating a culture that encourages donations from alumni and companies
