On October 1, 2024, the Kyushu University Opening Ceremony Fall 2024 was held at Shiiki Hall, Ito Campus, welcoming 442 students in total from across the globe. The attendees included 43 undergraduate students, 148 master¡¯s students, 180 doctoral students, and 71 students enrolled in Kyushu University¡¯s international programs¡ªJapan in Today's World (JTW)*1 and Japanese Language and Culture Course (JLCC) *2.
At the beginning of the ceremony, President Ishibashi extended words of welcome and encouragement to the new students. ¡°We will face many challenges, including climate change, regional conflicts, and economic difficulties, but I hope that you will spend this time of study at Kyushu University with ambition and aspiration. In these uncertain and challenging times, I hope all of you will keep an eye on the state of the world as you start your journey to fulfill your academic aims. I wish you all good luck.¡±
Following this, three student representatives gave speeches: Xu Hongji, who is enrolling in the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation; Riewpaiboon Siree, who is moving to the doctoral course after completing her master¡¯s course at the Graduate School of Design; and Sarwat Jona Angelo Sidney, who is joining the JLCC Program. In their speeches, they expressed gratitude for the welcome and shared their aspirations and resolutions for their new student life. The ceremony ended with a feeling of celebration and excitement for the coming year.

*1 Japan in Today's World Program (JTW): A short-term study abroad course for international students at the undergraduate level for 10 months or one semester. Courses on contemporary Japanese society, economy, and culture are offered in English.
*2 Japanese Language and Culture Course (JLCC): An 11-month course for undergraduate students majoring in Japanese language or Japanese studies at universities in Asia, Europe, or the United States. This course is designed to improve their Japanese language skills and deepen their understanding of Japanese society and culture.
