From September 22-29, 2024, four undergraduate students from the Medical Technology course at Kyushu University¡¯s School of Medicine visited Karolinska Institutet and Uppsala University in Sweden.

The Medical Technology course at Kyushu University promotes education with a forward-looking approach, anticipating the future of clinical laboratory science 10 to 20 years from now. In this field, it is increasingly important to train medical technologists who can work globally, as demonstrated by the worldwide spread of COVID-19 and the need for international collaboration.

However, educational systems for medical technologists differ from country to country. In the United States, for instance, education for medical technologists is not offered at the undergraduate level; instead, specialized institutions are responsible for educating students for each clinical test. Therefore, it is difficult for universities that train medical technologists at the undergraduate level to find an international counterpart for student exchange.

Under such circumstances, Kyushu University identified Swedish universities as suitable counterparts. The Department of Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Stockholm Liaison Office of Kyushu University, established a study abroad program in partnership with the Karolinska Institutet and Uppsala University in Sweden.

Additionally, it is worth noting that Kyushu University and Uppsala University are part of the MIRAI project*, a collaboration between 17 Japanese and Swedish universities that prioritizes health science.

The participants spent three days at Karolinska Institutet, attending classes and practical training, and giving a presentation in English to Karolinska students. They also went on an excursion to Uppsala University to visit the International Office and its medical education facilities. They found the interactive teaching and practical training environments at both universities highly inspiring.

In addition, the students met Japanese researchers and medical professionals at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital. Through stories of their real-life experiences, the participants learned about the differences in culture, medical systems, and work styles between Japan and Sweden.

Their stay in Sweden broadened their perspectives and encouraged them to consider their future careers. The Department of Health Sciences in the School of Medical Science provides students with international experiences and strives to foster future leaders in the global society.

*MIRAI is a collaboration between 17 Swedish and Japanese universities aimed at fostering and promoting long-term research partnerships between Sweden and Japan.Kyushu University has served as a co-chair university since 2024.
